Welcome Lie No. 2

James Taranto and his side-kicks at the Wall Street Journal turn up some amazing stuff on the web.  In “Best of the Web Today” for November 22, 2006, Taranto links to a Daily Mail photo feature  extolling the technological advances that allow us now to see inside the wombs of animals, to observe miniature elephants, dogs, and dolphins. Directing our attention to these things, Taranto exposes another welcome lie, this time concerning the nature of the human baby in utero.

The feature begins with these words: “An unborn elephant, tiny but perfect in every way. A dolphin swimming in the womb, just as it will have to swim in the ocean the moment it is born. An unborn dog panting. Each one amazing and now, thanks to these remarkable pictures, they can be seen for the first time.”

The photos truly are amazing.  Consider, for example, the tiny elephant shown below.

 elephant in the womb

We are told at the Daily Mail that this baby elephant is six months along its 24 month gestation.  No problem at all understanding that this is an elephant in the making, not an eggplant or a centipede.  Moving along some further months,we see the next photo of a baby elephent.

 another elephant in the womb

Here, the Daily Mail does not tell us this baby elephant is in the 24 month cycle.  But in the following photograph, we’re told that this baby elephant is at 12 months, that it weighs 26 pounds, and that It can use its trunk, and can curl it right up into its mouth and over its head.

 yet another elephant in the womb

In the photo below, we see a dog in utero at 52 days with a full coat of light cream hair.  Its whiskers are forming.

At day 63 (see below) we’re told that the pup is armed with the tools necessary to survive, including a highly acute sense of smell and the ability to hear sounds far beyond our human range of hearing.

Finally, below see the open-eyed dolphin baby, swimming in its mother’s womb.  These and many more photos are slated to be shown on the National Geographic Channel December 10, 2006.  See further photos from this upcoming presentation by clicking here.

One commenter at the Daily Mail says this: “It’s amazing to see that technology has developed so far and graces us with a gift such as these pictures. I am amazed at how alike human and animal embyos are! What a beautiful discovery.”

human lurking in wombBut, as Taranto notes, this point of view must certainly be false!  By way of pointing to the Welcome Lie concerning humans in the womb, Taranto says, “”By contrast, as we all know from reading the newspapers, there is no such thing as an unborn human being. We develop by a little-understood process in which a clump of cells, similar to a tumor or a fingernail, miraculously becomes a baby at the moment the entire clump is exposed to air. That humans and animals come into the world in such radically different ways pretty much demolishes the notion that we are the product of Darwinian evolution, doesn’t it?”

Indeed.

  5. What’s amazing to me is that people will see whatever they want to see. To me it’s obvious that as soon as arms and legs are discernable it’s also discernable that elephants are distinctly different than humans. Another person remarks how alike they are. People see what they want to see.

    Are you kidding? Have you even tried to look into evolution and how it works? I am not trying to insult your intelligence, but I don’t know how, from some pictures, you could gather that evolution is a sham. If you look at gestation pictures of human fetuses, you can see that we start to look like tadpoles or fish. Then develop out limbs and the tail regresses. Then we begin to really look like people. Evolution is a process of layering. It would be inefficient to destroy the machine and build a new one from scratch, so evolution lays new plans over old ones. And how does one attribute for the fact that we share 96% of our genes with chimpanzees? That is a closer relation than rats to mice.

  7. ok, so you people are idiots. of course evolution exhists. so are you saying that elephants and dolphins and dogs evolved, but humans didn’t? if you think about it, that’s exactly what you’re saying. Unlike Alf, i am TRYING to insult your intelligence, but it simply doesn’t exhist. and notice how you choose animals that simply aren’t said to be extremely closely related to us. if you were to look at a gorilla vs. a human (which you dumb butts didn’t even show), they would look so similar, you idiots wouldn’t know the difference. so try that one on for size.

  8. Agatha,

    Thank you for your comment. It helps to show why the photos fail to make their point when they encounter someone with a mind like yours. No one would believe such a mind existed if I were to report it. Happily, your comment relieves me of the burden of proof on this point.

    The article does crack me up. My praise goes to Taranto for showing the obvious, that while in the womb, no one questions what each animal is. beautiful pictures. true. , but our society will state there is no doubt that these are unbord baby animals, but if human? It’s nothing more than a clump of fetal tissue, legally disposed of by the wish’s of the mother.
    How Ironically sad.

    Isaiah 49:1 Listen to me, O coastlands,
    pay attention, you peoples from far away!
    The Lord called me before I was born,
    while I was in my mother’s womb he named me.

    Psalms 139 13 For you formed my inward parts;
    you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.

    14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. [1] Wonderful are your works;
    my soul knows it very well.

    16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
    in your book were written, every one of them,
    the days that were formed for me,
    when as yet there was none of them.

    How wonderful and special each human is to the Almighty!

    (Now, what’s this about a clump of flesh, again???)

  10. Beautiful ph0tos. So many “pro-choice” people do every sort of mental gymnastics to pretend that the unborn child is NOT a human (or, “Well, it’s a human but not a person,” or, my favourite, “It’s human, but it’s not A human, you idiot”), but cannot refute pictures like these.

    Technology is on our side. The heart starts beating about 3 weeks after conception (5 weeks LMP). Women’s morning sickness varies, depending on the genetic make-up of the child. It may even relate to the foods the child enjoys later in life.

    if you were to look at a gorilla vs. a human (which you dumb butts didn’t even show), they would look so similar, you idiots wouldn’t know the difference. so try that one on for size.

    Why should that matter? Do you actually think it is anything but a baby in there? It’s not a gorilla, or an elephant, or a tadpole, or a zucchini. It is certainly alive (otherwise, no need for an abortion – such is miscarriage); it is certainly human, as it is the progeny of two humans. When the gametes of a male and female human meet, they do not form zucchini; they do not form a human, nine months later; it forms a human right then. I’m continually shocked at the anti-science rhetoric employed by the pro-abort movement; as an engineer, the scientific ignorance promulgated by said pro-abort types makes me fear for the future of our country.
